What do our cameras, our eyes, and our souls have in common? They all rely on the presence of light. Let’s think about that for a minute.
A camera captures moments in time that you want to preserve. In order for the camera to do that effectively, light must be present. Let’s say that your kids or grandkids are playing in the backyard, having a great time. You want to capture the moment, so you grab your camera, lift it to your eye and snap the picture. The outdoor light bounces off the kids and into the camera, where it hits the film and, through a chemical reaction to the light, produces a picture that you proudly display in a frame or a photo album. But, without light, there would be no picture. Whether the source of light is the sun, light bulbs, candles, or the flash on the camera, light must be present for the camera to work. Just try taking a picture in pitch black darkness and see what happens!
Our eyes work the same way. Light reflects off objects that we are looking at and enters our eyes. When the light reaches the retina, signals are sent to the brain, allowing us to see the objects we are looking at. Just as the camera cannot record an image without the presence of light, so our eyes cannot see things without the presence of light. When light is completely absent and we are sitting in complete darkness, we are unable to see. We can put our own hands in front of our faces, but without light, we cannot see them.
So, what about our souls? Without light, our souls live in the darkness where sin and the ways of the flesh corrupt them. Just as a camera and our eyes need light to be effective, so our souls need light for our spiritual condition to be effective and uncorrupted. But the source of that light is not the sun, the moon, a light bulb, or a candle. The source of the light that our souls require is the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the light of the world. When we choose to follow Him, we will not walk in darkness, but will instead walk in the light of life (John 8:12). In darkness, there is sin and death, but in Jesus, there is life, a life that provides the light that we need (John 1:3). Jesus is the light that shines in the darkness, and there is no darkness that can ever overcome that light (John 1:5).
Our heavenly Father desires that we, His children, walk in light rather than in darkness and, in order for us to do that, He has given us His Son, a light that is brighter than the sun.
